My mother wrote on the back of this picture: "Mullan High School. Rita, Adrienne, Florence all graduated from here -- Rita in 1928 (she finished in three years), Adrienne in 1931, & Florence in 1935 -- and Barry in 1958. One small corner of the elementary school shows in the background. Ken was school superintendent here for four years, then we came to BYU."

A reminder of one of my greater ego trips. I ran for President of the freshman class at BYU in 1958. This was my campaign picture. I came in 5th out of 13 candidates. End of political career!!!

In 1958 I represented my high school, Mullan High, in what we called "Boy's State" held in Pocatello, ID. I am on the back row, third from the left.

Johnny Prescott's Shell station on the old highway in Mullan. Dad bought all his gas from Johnny. And, he traded a shotgun to Johnny for repairs to the front of the 1950 Mercury that I had allowed to roll down the hill behind our house and crash into the garbage truck. Robert was in the car at the time. I was draining the radiator -- something that nobody does today.

The summer of 1953 we moved to Bellevue, Idaho, where my father was the superintendent of schools. This is my 8th grade class. The teacher, Miss Jean Mizer, wrote the story "Cipher in the Snow" which was later made into a very popular church film by the LDS church. She was not LDS. The class members, L to R top row: Noleen Carter, Russell Grandeen (Russ was a member of a religious group called The Followers. They did not believe in doctors. One day summer of 1954 he tipped over his father's tractor severing the artery in his leg. His family gathered around and prayed for him as he bled to death.), Elva Kohler, Rex Roark, Melvin Fisher. I can't express in words the love and respect that I have for my dear grandparents, John and Mary Elva Lauritzen. They were and are great people.

That hay belonged to a man who rented the property from our landlady. That is Mike, Barry, Lynne and Robert. The dog -- one of the best dogs a boy ever had -- is Mr. Clem. He could be blocks away, but when I whistled, he would come running. One day he just didn't come back. I think he must have been killed by one of the neighbors.

His nickname which he carried for years was "Mudpie Mike". Every chance he got he was playing in the mud -- even if he had to make the mud for himself. Spring 1951.

My parents would have probably been arrested today for allowing their children to swim in the irrigation water. We had a ditch that flowed across the front of the property and when it was our water turn, this was the result. We often found large carp that came down the ditch into our front lawn with the water. My father was a workaholic and expected his kids to be the same. We didn't have a horse to pull the plow in his garden, so cousin Bill, myself, Lynne, and cousin Anne filled the bill. Spring of 1951.

Another shot of the chicken coop along with some of the chickens. Also, the hay barn is to the left. We never stored hay there but did raise some turkeys who preferred to perch in the rafters at night.

I don't have a picture, but later Dad built a platform for my pup tent just on the other side of that clothesline. I slept in that tent many nights, often accompanied by one or both of my brothers.

It is just a guess, but I believe this is another shot up Little Cottonwood Canyon in June 1951. I don't know whose arm that is, but the other players are Robert, cousin Bill, and Lynne.
